pre-fall round up 2012

after doing my review of helmut lang's pre-fall collection, i thought it was only fair that i did a round-up of my top pre-fall collections, so here it is.

Zac Posen
modelled by: Hilary Rhonda

once again mr Posen has made it into a roundup, and can you blame me? with his impeccable taste in silhouette, fabric, and embellishment; it's easy to understand why any girl (or guy!) would lust after such a beautiful collection. on his tenth anniversary, zac posen has gone back to what he knows best: dress making, from a white wool crepe sheath with anatomical seaming designed to diminish any waist to his tradmark bias cut dresses and even ball gowns fit to make any gyspy princess jealous. this year saw  a revival of chinoiserie,  mr posen choosing to create european shapes out of eastern fabrics, producing a truly glamourous oriental collection.

Temperley London
modelled by: Erjona Ala

what a year for alice temperley after having pippa middelton wear one of her dresses at the wedding reception of the year (no, not kim kardashian's) ms temperley has continued to go from strength to strength. this new elegant lady of london, is eerily reminiscent of a debutante's wardrobe. from the lace alice bands, to the white gloves and slightly awkward pose, ms temperley has designed a collection perfect for ex-teenagers who still want to look youthful but professional at the same time.

Michael Kors
modelled by: Kelli Lumi, Mirte Maas, Hanne Gaby Odiele, Kori Richardson

michael kors is a new addition to my favourites and this collection has proved to me his skills as a savvy designer. drawing influence from ann bonfoey taylor, a colorado aristocrat turned skiwear deisgner this collection includes dip-dyed mongolian lamb skirts and vests, and a-symmetrical hem lines. the knowledge that mr kors carries of the importance of smart coats is not lost in this collection, my personal favourite being the ivory zip-front coat (featured in the second set of images)  with a built-in leather harness belt giving two meanings to 'smart'

Pringle of Scotland
modelled by: Magda Languinge

pringle is a name i have often come across but never really seen their collections, however after this pre-fall i am in love. a 200-year old company specialising in knitwear, they've really pulled out the stops this collection to make it  modern and new. and maybe it helps that it is only alistair carr's third collection and before that had never worked with knitwear in his collections before. for this collection he wanted to 'twist things up a bit' and twist he did, with twisted seams and collars. even the shoes, for which he collaborated with chrissie morris, can be 'twisted' the side leather panels are detachable.

Band of Outsiders
modelled by: lydia carron

scott sternberg looked east for this collection, but not as far east as you might think, to manhatten through woody allen's eyes. 'i was re-watching manhattan for, like, the 15th time and that way of dressing you see diane keaton's character . . .just seemed really fresh, or close to it', indeed the character to which sternberg refers to is a snobby self-styled intellectual, which gave this collection it's edge. including collegiate cord blazers, 70's flares, camel coat andpleated skirts might have looked stuffy and uptight, but they're given an edgy feel by the uneven handkercheif hefs, and rough edges that give it a funhouse-mirror feel.

have yourself a merry little christmas

hello everyone! i'm starting to feel quite festive now. got the tree up, the fire on, candles lit and i'm watching michael buble's christmas show with the family. but i have just enough time to show you what i've got on my list this year!

i really hope i'm on the nice list this year and santa puts these beneath my tree. being a typical fashion student i couldn't not ask for a pattern cutting book, they're so useful to refer to, and with the serious part of of my course coming up any help i can get to create my collection. and speaking of collections, my camera collection has hit a halt, and having met someone with an instax and seen the photos i would loveee to add one of these to my collection.

anyway, enough about my wishes. have any of you sent your letter to santa?

incy wincy spider

whilst nicole and michael colovos are known for drawing their inspiration from obscure artist and works, this season's collection takees that obscurity to whole new level. referring to images i remember being in my gcse biology textbook many moons ago, of spiders webs after the spider was injected with certain stimuli, the one that particularly inspired colovos was caffeine. being a caffeine fiend myself i know what the wrong end of caffeine can do to you, so it's interesting to see the adverse effect on the spider's web.

photo courtesy of science photo library

the colovos' collection is edgy and ever so slightly effie the always controversial skins character with burnout lace tops, erractically pattern dresses and a muted colour scheme reminiscent of a spider's web on a cold autumn morning. the green of a leaf reflected in a bead of dew, the grey of the first breath of fogsoft, simple colours to contrast the hard edged theme.

this collection is amazing, so beautiful and i can't wait to see this in the highstreet!

got any favourite pre-fall collections yet?

rave accessories week

i've not really been keeping you up to date with what's been going on in my life outside of this blog, and i'm guilty, but i thought i'd just show you these images of the accessories project photo shoot i had to work on. my crit results were mixed with some people saying that the girly smiling and poses were off putting and others saying that i didn't style it correctly, suggesting i should have matched the fluoro in the inside of the shot glasses in her clothing. however, my tutor said that she really liked my shoot given that i'm not a sttlying but a design student. i'll let you guys decide, what do you think?

happy halloween!

hello i've had a fantastically busy weekend and i thought i'd show you what i'd been up to, firstly i had my uni's halloween extravanganza at proud 2 on friday. it was actually a bit of a flop as it was organized by and external company and there were two other (larger) institutions who had a large proporation of non-english speaking students, and also as it wasn't a private event, a lot of britney fans on a high after her concert. the pre-drink was actually a lot more fun at kate's as you can tell, and i was really impressed by mhairi's make-up as i couldn't even tell it was her any more! on the saturday i had a party at an old friend's who is also at uni with me which was full of piracy, rum, mad dancing and polaroids.

anyone else have a fantastic weekend they want to share?

clearly, the biggest statement this season is sequins. combined with chiffon, trailing down bell shaped skirts, in plisse pleats. with a-symmetrical necklines, grecian gowns, and seventies silhouettes, and tie necks. although i love this collection, the critics were scathing, suggesting that it was more alongside gossip in tabloid magazines, but we will see, we'll see.

Jason Wu Spring 2012

i had to, i just had to jump the gun and post about the catwalks, after seeing the beauty of jason wu's latest collection, there's something so beautiful about the simplicity of the collection that speaks out to me. the collection can be summarised in three groups: neon brights, flower petal print, and whites

brights
modelled by (l-r) : aymeline valade, (no name provided), josephine skriver, isabella melo

when jason wu approaches neons, he keeps it simple: block colour, black belts, and blocks of texturised white. the a-symmetry in the pink skirts and hems means that blocks are broken up. his use of chiffon-like almost weightless nylon mutes the colours. there's no doubt that the lime-green short in the front long in the back (no, not a mullet!) ball gown will be gracing our red-carpets on the lithe body of the next mischa barton

flower petals
modelled by (l-r) : mirte maas, ming xi, valerija kelava, daria strokous

when mr wu cited infamous graffiti artist KAWS as an influence for this collection, it wasn't just lip-service, this gorgeous falling-petal silk screen print is a result of the collaboration of jason wu and KAWS, and isn't it wonderful? from the elegant dress made from nylon to those gorgeous tailored shorts, even palazzo pants. there is no doubt that this print is going to be shaking from the trees of the highstreet this spring.

whites
modelled by (l-r) : caroline brasch nielsen, lindsey wixson, siri tollerød, daphne groenveld

white has always been a spring summer colour, it sings of fresh sheets, fresh cut grass, and wispy white clouds against a blue sky. so it's no surprise that a large proportion of this collection is white. but this white is spruced up and made new with textured fabric, loosely pleated skirts and blouses with added peplums all finished off with strappy black sandals and skinny black belts. perfection. obviously.

so, what've been your favourite collections so far? and keep an eye out for my round up of the spring collections soon!

rave week #1

hello, and welcome to my weekly update on my studies as a foundation art student at ravensbourne, or rave as it has been affectionately nicknamed by us kids who call it uni. this week i have been studying the art of lens based media, i.e. photography, animation, and film.

monday: the history of and introduction to the lens and the importance of composition.
as our first official day of ravensbourne things were, if i'm honest, a little scary and big and shiny. as we had been set a task over the weekend to produce 15-20 photos based on 'this moment in my life' i was incredibly nervous i had interpreted the brief wrong, silly i know as there's no wrong answer in the art world. our tutor, tom, gave us a talk on the history of the lens and photography, and i had a little geek out as a lot of it i had covered last year in my physics a level as part of the astrophysics unit. this meant that the knowledge that was imparted on me made a lot more sense as i understood the basic mechanics of the camera. after this he clarified what was included in the lens based media pathway, which was quite intriguing to me, as i didn't realise it included sound design, something i've been interested in for a while through my music a-level. and then the practical. i'll admit, during the practical itself i hated it, it pushed me well outside my comfort zone. my drawing has always been something that i've kept personal, and producing work on such a large scale with everyone around means that there is no way no one could not see what i was doing. i chose the photograph of my road sign because i thought it would be easy to reproduce onto such a large scale, but i think i was mistaken, as the perspective proved more than difficult, and there was very little detail to put in, so i ended up finishing early and adding things in that weren't really there. definitely a big mistake, and given the chance to do this task again i'd definitely pick an image with a slightly easier perspective and more detail. after lunch we had 'crits' which are essentially talking about each others' work within small groups. i found this incredibly interesting, as during discussion points were raised about pieces that i would never thought of at all, and that there are so many levels within someone's work.

tuesday: the art of storytelling
the second day started gruesomely, with watching a short film based on the circumstances surrounding robert breechen, a man who was resuscitated in order to be executed, which stimulated really interesting conversations about the way the penal system works today and comparing our system to the us. we then moved on to the art of story telling, and establishing what made a good story, i.e. a beginning, middle, and end.. We then watched some short films by a well known film maker, and analysed them for their story telling, and discussed what made a good story. I have never really thought about what makes a good story and how the parts come together, so for me, this was really thought provoking and has influenced the way in which I analyse story telling mediums. We were set the task in groups of four to come up with some scenarios for which we could tell a story, our group got very side tracked with one story, and then managed to swing it round too make up several individual stories. We then had to come with a problem, resolution and struggles through which our character persevered in order to come up with a resolution to the intial problem. I actually found it quite difficult to seperate the intial problem and other things out from the whole story. We also were quite off the wall with our story making, but it did mean we weren't constrained by reality and were able to come up with some really unusual conclusions, although we did run into the problem of deus ex machina, or god of the machine, and thus making our stories believable.

Day Three - SDS
We were set the task of producing a set of six photographs or a short film following the rules of set-up, problem, struggle, resolution. I chose to produce a short stop-motion film about a girl who loses her balloon. Although the principles of stop motion were fairly new to me, I had a good idea, and knew my equipment and software reasonably well. My downfall was that I chose to animate it using hand made drawings, which meant that several characters and images needed to be re-drawn for frames in order to get the visual effect I wanted. This meant that I slightly under estimated the time I would need to create the film, so it is very simplistic. When attempting a project again I will definately ensure that I fully plan, and in the case of film storyboard, my ideas so I know exactly what it is I will need to undertake in order to ensure my work is of the highest standard possible.

Day Four
Back in college we spent the morning preparing our work for presentation as crits in the afternoon. Again I was nervous about the crit, but knowing that several people were in the same boat as me now, made it much easier. We all presented our images or films and discussed techniques that each student has used. We then left feedback on sheets using the guidelines that Damian had given us to ensure that everyone had sufficient feedback for the work that they had produced. General feedback comments for me were:

- Good composition of music against images.
- Well followed structure.
- Unclear in the scene with the dog.
- Only one camera angle used, meant that there was the same perspective.
- Simplistic nature works to make the story clear.

I was incredibly pleased with this feedback, given that it was my first time producing a film in this way, and it's defiantely something I will consider in the future. What I have taken away from this, is that I need to ensure that I make everything clear to everyone, as things that are clear to me, might not be clear to others. I have really enjoyed this pathway as it has opened my eyes to the way that the art world works.

baroque, bohemian, opulence, and apologies

okay, guilty, i've neglected posting for a bit, mostly so i can spend some time with the boy flat hunting, and the rest of the time fretting about a level results released today. bcd for anyone who cares, securing my place at ravensbourne, a specialist arts university based in north greenwich, near the millenium dome. but enough about that, it's another post away. i have made some decisions though, regarding the style of the blog. it will mostly contain my research and evalution, but with self&street style, plus trends and catwalk analysis. however whilst i have been away i have been researching. and today i would like to introuduce to you bavaria, bohemian opulence, or baroque punk.

according to the oxford english dictionary , the word baroque is derived from the portuguese word "barroco", spanish "barroco", or french "baroque", all of which refer to a "rough or imperfect pearl". the word bohemianterm "bohemian"  describes nontraditional lifestyles of marginalized and impoverished artists, writers, musicians, and actors in major european cities – emerged in france in the early 19th century when artists and creators began to concentrate in the lower-rent, lower class gypsy neighbourhoods. combine those and that's the image that many collections are set to parade on the catwalk, and topshop have kicked off releasing their bavarian collection just a few weeks ago. bavaria is the epitome of bohemian opulence, with a fancy-laid back feel, and yes what you're feeling is probably what people were when they were first introduced to carrot cake...i still don't get it, but the boy tells me it's fabulous...

from top, clockwise: - leopard&floral top £36 - cream faux sheepskin trapper hat £25- cream gypsy embroidered tunic £40- - red rose print sheer kimono £42- chandelier latern earrings £14 - Artwork velvet lace up shoes in red £75- Moto berry baxter jeans £40 - etched bar collar necklace £16.50- black circle lace tights £12 -
p.s. sorry about the image quality, i'm not really sure what's going on here.

her name was written on a photograph

i'd like to introduce you to a new addition to my collection, my new baby, the cannon 500d. an (and only) 18th birthday present from my parents.

and while she is very shiny and new and exciting, that's not what i'm posting about. studs. they're the new zips. studded jackets, studded shoes, anything with studs i'm feeling right now, in the glam underground style that's taking over our high street

emily blunt & rupert grint in wild target (2010)
credit

take this jacket worn by emily blunt in one of my favourite films at the moment, wild target. this jacket is gorgeous and if i hadn't spent so much on my last jacket i would quite happily customise it to look like this. i find cropped jackets to be a bit hit and miss as i always feel i look like i'm wearing clothes four sizes too small, but the high waist of this skirt means that it compliments the jacket and highers the waist. but not all of us are emily blunt and have amazing stylists, so here are my picks of high street studded items for you to buy and accessorise yourself.

- moto vintage wash sparkle stud hotpants £75 Topshop - vectra studded slippers £28 Topshop - stud bag £24 fcuk by ASOS - paprika halterneck studded panel dress £32 Paprika by ASOS - studded belt £19.99 river island by ASOS - stud court shoe £40 ASOS - light brown studded cross body bag £29.99 river island - studded biker jacker £250 Warehouse-

can't afford to buy a studded piece yourself? no problem, diy studding is more fun anyway, i found this studding tutorial by fashion blogger samantha (beauty-crush) who, by the way has amazing style and has a sleek makeup giveaway on at the moment so you must must check out her blog!

and here's my attempt at studding, my parents for birthday also gave me their second hand camera case. it's very large with room for a second lense, and lots of pockets for filters and accesories. i can't wait to get out and about with it now that i am officially an art student!

there ain't no rest for the wicked

so i'll admit it, my posts recently have been very research heavy, and i'll admit that is because for the last few months my head has been full of the life of stars and renaissance composers. and then when my a-levels were finnaly done, it was time to put up my final exhibition for my textiles, my first gig, and then the most awaited event of the year, my leaver's prom. and i guess i haven't really introduced myself either. so here i am:

from l-r: micah&i, charlotte&i
my blue dress from
monsoon, silver pendant from accessorize annd hair bands from new look [sale]
micah's tux rented from austin reed.

i have to admit that this tradition we have borrowed from our cousins overseas, unlike others...supersizing and teen dramas with no plots are just some to name, but prom night is quite special, it's the one night other than our wedding nights when we're truly allowed to look and feel like princesses, and i'm not going to argue with that! i mean just look at some of the girls from my year:

from l-r: kelly, baljit, sophia, hayley in coastjess, beca in zara, katy, and kate in ted baker
photos via the maidstone photo factory
don't they all look lovely? but that's not the only thing that's happened this month for me, it was also my a-level graduate show, very exciting! it marks the end of a very long era for me, my last public event at my secondary school, somewhere i've been for seven long years! so here are some snaps of the work displayed.

models l-r: alice, rosie, jordana, kelly, beca.
designers: me, rosie, talisa, kelly, elen.

this may seem an odd thing, but at my school, tradition is a very important idea, so the annual graduate show, or showcase is a way for prospective young designers get the chance to show their work. it also builds the confidence of those who model, as the older students showing work ask younger students to model it. it's very cool and very important to maintaining a life-long tradition.

after this i had a bit of a rest and then my 18th birthday, here are a few photos of me and my family

i apologise for such an image heavy post, and so far from actual fashion, but so much has happened that i wanted to talk to you about! anything happening in your lives?
ciao for now lovelies

i've a confession...

for those who don't know me, you must must know that one of my favourite designers of all time was and will be for a very long time, mr alexander mcqueen, his innate flair for tailoring, proven by his acceptance onto a course at c.s.m without a formal interview, and then after which he was picked up by isabella blow, and sky rocketed from there. but i'm not here to tell you his biography, there's a book to do that... i'm hear to talk about the clothes and my favourites from over the years.

please be warned, some images contain nudity/sensitive ideas.

2010
spring rtw ''plato's atlantis"
models: edythe hughes, drielly oliveira, polina kasina, anastasija kondratjeva,
heidi mount, kasia struss, anya kazakova, hanne gaby odiele

this is one of last collections that mcqueen oversaw personally, and for me it's a slightly sentimental collection. i remember sitting in the study area  for the sixth form with my best friend kelly hanging over a battered acer laptop from two thousand and never, eagerly waiting as the images loaded to see what genius he had come up with this time. kelly and i were greeted with the lovechild of gaga and darwin, with models covered in white pan and hair done up in the shape of antlers and rabbit ears. these alien-esqe pieces are developed from images of snakeskin, leopard print, and other animal skins which were then digitally enhanced and moulded to form patterns that resemble an animal print you can't quite put your finger on, is it a sniger? a pea-raffe? the black patterns are then printed onto a multi-coloured fabric from greens, blues, yellows and tans. but that's not the only thing that this collection covers, the later pieces look like the remnants of the alien's suits, metallics, blues, wiring and holographic fabrics in silhouettes both streamlined and angular. it's impossible for me to find something i dislike about this collection.

   1995
couture 'highland rape'

the catwalk is lined with moss, clumps of scottish oak leaves and pumped with clouds of dry ice to give the sense of a foggy scottish moor. all this so mcqueen can talk about the 'rape' of scotland by the english and a subject which had resonance with the designer as his family is historically scottish. the collection is heavy on tartan (how couldn't it be?), chiffon and even tampons at points. the dresses are torn, highly revealing, and this is the least controversial part of it! the chiffon is dyed in moss and lichen colours and heat distressed to look like it's lain out on the moor for a month.

2001
spring ready-to-wear
models: jade parfitt, k
irsten owen

a large box awaits the audience center stage, the lights come up and it's a 1950's psychiatric ward for women. the models wore alice in wonderland costumes; great eagles perched on fabric wrapped branches; and head scarves wound so tightly they seem that they have mutated from the ladies' head:  extraordinary mussel-shell skirts to impossibly chic pearl-colored cocktail dresses; they slithered and strutted while uselessly attempting to fly over the cuckoo's nest

and the future for the mcqueen label? well sarah burton has taken mr mcqueen's place, and although she's not as daring as alexander mcqueen, she chanels the mcqueen code in everything she does, take the baroque opulance in the resort '12 collections for example (pictured below) ms burton takes clasic office and evening wear and twists it to make glizty over-the-top but perfect dresses, and lace blouses fit for any office.

wellies&wailers

well, it's true festival season is truly upon us. with my friend heading off to download, one of the grimier festivals, i decided to put together a kit of things to stay fresh and beautiful whilst enjoying all of your favourite bands at the main stage.

i love this leopard print bandeau from topshop, £10, but i'm not quite confident enough to bare it alone so i would probably accompany it with this sheer pocket shirt in beach pebble from gap £32.95, which would also look perfect with these lightwash denim shorts from new look £21.99.

maybe it was my visit to the spaghetti western film sets in southern spain or my secret wish to be a cowboy, but fringed bags, and boots have been on my mind for a few years now. so imagine my excitement when i found this taupe fringed leather satchel £35 from topshop and these black mocasins also from topshop £36, both of which are perfect for accessorizing your festival outfits, and keeping your essentials on your person.

or, if it's too wet for moccasins and flip flops, how about these union jack wellies from newlook £19.99, since the royal wedding i have never been prouder to be british and wear our union jack, so these wellies are perfect for me.

if you're like me, in the heat my makeup slides off my face faster than ice cream on a hot car bonnet, but this gel liner in ink topshop £8, is long lasting and tiny enough to fit in practically any clutch, and this ultra fine eyeliner brush from bobbi brown £21 is definately worth a splurge as it is so easy to handle and produces smooth even lines.

of course no outfit is complete without jewellery. i do have a tendency to over accessorize when it comes to jewellery and end up looking like a mr t auditionee reject but this lizard necklace from topshop £10 has really caught my eye as a statement piece. maybe it's my boyfriend's live-in roommate big dave, the blue tongued skink, who after several bonding moments, a feeding and a mistaking of my finger for food is now my best friend, or alexander mcqueen's final collection but lizards and lizard-skin print are drawing me like wasps to a summer picnic

it's so easy to forget the most important things, so this ultimate festival kit from firebox £26.49 contains evrything you need with  lip balm, a PVC poncho, pocket-size tissues, face wipes, a tube of SPF30 sunscreen, a UFK keychain torch, toilet seat covers, anti-bacterial hand gel, a travel toothbrush with paste, chewing gum, an emergency blanket, a mini first-aid kit, a glow in the dark whistle handy for ravers stuck in a timewarp and travel size Kiss My Face shower gel, deodorant, shampoo, condoms and earplugs to block out those late night drunkards stumbling back to their tent, all of which come in a handy canvas bag.

and where are you going to stash all your goodies whilst you stand knee deep in mud at the front of marina and the diamond's set? only in this cute three man pop up tent from
argos £85 with the bright spots, you'll never lose your tent in the sea of mud spattered green canvas.

to keep yourself fresh, with these tea tree facewipes from superdrug £2.92, one of my personal makeup kit must-haves, due to their skin revitalizing ingredients, accompanied by this simple sun-kissed moisturiser from boots £3.49 which has a gentle sensitive skin gradual tanner for your face which means that your face will match up you face with the rest of your body with daily application. i don't know about you but during the summer, my hair is good for nothing but a simple plaited updo to keep it away from my neck to keep me cool, and elnett normal from superdrug £3.49 is the one brand i can rely on to keep my hair up and away from my neck.

and to keep all those memories without damaging your shiny new slr? this kodak ultra, compact single use camera £9.99 produces high quality photographs with bright vibrant colours.

so what about you? what're your festival favourites?
